How to solve: Windows can't stop your 'Generic volume' device

Well, there are a bunch of things you could do to resolve this issue on windows 7. But, I found the simplest of all:

1. Right click on my computer, select manage
2. Click on disk management tab
3. Left tab (which has probably "disk 1" labelled ) on external storage drive(here in my case WD HDD) right click and select "offline"
4. Now from taskbar, from usb icon, click and select your WD HDD, it says now "safely remove"

This should solve the problem.
