How do I book bulk tickets on IRCTC ?

What is Bulk Booking?
In case, you require a reservation in excess of the above limit of 6 passengers you may contact the controlling officer/Chief Reservation supervisor of the concerned reservation office for permission to book a number of passengers in a group. However, such booking of bulk accommodation is available only after 10.00 hrs on computerized reservation system subject to an overall limit on trains as per extant rules and availability of accommodation.

Key terms used:
1. Chief Reservation Supervisor (CRS) - Authorized to allow bulk booking for 18 passengers only
2. The commercial manager (TCM) - Authorized to allow bulk booking for more than 18 passengers

Points to remember: Bulk booking is categorized into two aspects.
Bulk 1: If number of passengers are lesser than or equal to 18
Bulk 2: if number of passengers are more than 18

List of letters to be kept ready:
1. List of all the people traveling along with their Age & Sex - 2 copies
2. A letter to respective officer:

In the case of Bulk 1 - A letter to "Chief Reservation Supervisor" stating the reason for travel and requesting him/her to permit the booking.

In the case of Bulk 2 - A letter to "The commercial manager" stating the reason for travel and requesting him/her to permit the booking.

3. Carry a proof which states the reason for travel - 2 copies

Here is step by step guide to help in bulk booking of berths:
Fill out the Reservation form with details such as train number, date of journey and of berths and the list of passengers. Write your full address & mobile number on the side. Also, mention "List enclosed" to state that you have mentioned the passengers list as a separate copy.

Now go get your approval to do the bulk booking. Once you get the approval reach out to the "Bulk booking" ticket counter and get your reservations done.

The process seems very simple but it took me 2 days to run around the railway reservation office and find out the right procedure. So I thought of writing this article which might save your time. Do you need to show proof of the address as well? I mean if i am staying out of station due to job and my current address is different will it matter or would i need to give my permanent address which is mentioned in my driving license if case they wish to verify. Please advice.

Like how many days earlier we can book. I heard advance booking can be done only 89 days prior.
Also Bulk booking is permitted for only one third of the available quota on that time.? Is this information right???

Hi, Vinay Thanks for the knowledgeable post.
I have applied for the same but at the last stage they gave me 5 forms and told to fill 6 names in one form, as i have requested for bulk booking of 30 persons.

I am confused whether i got tickets in same coach or not.

The only way your task can be achieved is that one can become irctc authorized agent. an agent can book multiple tickets under him and also earn great commissions .
